My baby started school today!

11:00 p.m. 1-12-09
A little first day update:
I got a text from her 10:34, which was about 1 hour after her first classes ended and just before her second class started stating,
"I love this!"

We picked her up around 3:30 and she was sitting on the bench with her new computer already working on homework. Later in the evening Pooker took Goobers and Bear with her to buy some school supplies. She worked hard on her math work trying to get it all finished knowing that she would be working the next day. I would say it is off to a good start. I am sure it will have it's ups and downs but equally sure that she will succeed. Thanks for the prayers.

7:30 a.m. 1-12-09
I know that this is an odd post considering my baby is 17 1/2. Pooker starts at community college this morning. No words of wisdom, no tears, and no school uniform.
I was able to grab this very quick shot and it wasn't so much "let's capture this moment" as it was, "Get out of my way, I am running late!" Good luck Pooker, Do your best! Mom and Dad are proud of you.

Product of some of the giggles . . .

. . .and Pooker's new imac.

Giggles, High School Giggles!

Mr. T has been out of town for the week. It was a very easy going week. We ate simple meals, we stayed up late, and we had friends spend the night on Friday night. When you have two parents that are super busy in life sometimes you don't get to take the time to just relax and giggle. We didn't start school this week. Instead we put the decorations away, planned the next half of the school year and tried to organize the huge mess in our lives that we call the laundry. So on the last night we Pooker and Goober decided to have friends spend the night.

Pooker had one of her dearest friends through high school over. She and Meggers have gone to dances together, crushed on boys together and worn out more than one telephone together. Megger's mom, Mrs. Z and I planned their school out together years ago. We sat at a coffee shop and mapped out what we hoped they would take and what books we wanted them to use. Each of us making separate decisions but some still the same. Mrs. Z and I planned the Catholic Coffee Club for these two. Their friendship has had it's ups and downs over the past 4 years but they have always loved to just sit and giggle. Mrs. Z and I took them to Austin to see a concert a few years back and the entire ride was one big giggle fest with a zillion "jk"s thrown in.

Goobers is just now becoming good friends with Dom-N-Q. They have that same ability to giggle at anything. Both girls have their own interests, gifts and passion but they share something special. I can only imagine 3 years from now when they are looking at starting college together that they will also share a history that Pooker and Meggers share. They already giggle non stop.

So our slumber fest (let's be honest I bet there will be little slumber) started with watching some of our favorite TV shows. Once they ended the two pairs have gone into separate rooms. The little ones are all tucked into bed but these kiddos are still up just remembering when and giggling. I love the sound. I wish I could bottle that feeling. Every grown woman remembers giggling in high school and the truth is we miss it.

I pray that Goobers and Dom-N-Q will have many a night like this one and I pray that Pooker and Meggers never loose that silliness that has kept their parents up many a night listening to them. Thank you God for all the giggles, thank you for best friends for my daughters, and thank you for the high school years that can be filled with silliness.

I also want to offer up a little prayer for my own high school giggle buddies. To Sus, Julie, and most of all Patti. I miss our nights of endless giggles. God Bless each of you! ( Yes I will eventually dig out one of my old photos and share. It might take a week or so, but I plan to find one!)

B-Ball Girl's B-Ball Game

This is a very bad picture but it is what we did last night. We packed the crew up and headed to the local public high school. Our friend B-Ball Girl had a game. Pooker's friend plays basketball with HCYA. It is a great organization that allows the homeschool kids to have a chance to play sports against traditional school kids on a very competitive level.
Last night it was HCYA VS The Woodlands Highschool. The JV Lady Warriors did not win but played a good game.
We tried to play basketball with HCYA a few years back. It was too intense for our blood, but we loved the people. These kiddos work very hard to compete and always give their opponents a run for their money.
The program as a whole is well known in the area. The boys club makes the paper often and the games are often watched by the scouts. Not this game, it was a little less intense.
We really do like having the opportunity to support our peers that homeschool with us.
An added bonus was that a friend from LifeTeen was on the opposite team. She was very good as well. Wish she was on our side.
The very best part was running into old friends. Thank you God for a fun night out. Simple, cheap, and exciting.

Booker has finished high school!

January 3, 2009 is the date listed on Pooker's official transcript as the date she is finished with her high school studies. Along the way we were often asked "how do you do it?" Just remember it didn't start with her as a teenager.

Way back when Pooker was just 5 years old I had it in my heart that I wanted to homeschool her. Her dad did not want that for her. We had both grown up going to private Catholic grade schools and then high schools. He wanted the same for our children. So we researched both and actually enrolled her into the local Catholic School. We jumped through the hoops, took placement tests, made deposits, turned in medical records, met with teachers, signed up for volunteer lists, ordered the uniforms and then we waited. (. .and waited . . .and waited)

Her placement scores were very high and we had turned our paper work in early but there were too many kids that year. In the end Pooker was put on the waiting list and not really set for classes at all. We had never wanted her to go to public school but now she would have to start there until a spot opened.

So J said to me, "Go ahead and try this homeschool thing. We will try it for one year and see how it goes." When Pooker's peers started at school that year we began her work at home. Pooker was a very smart young woman and loved learning. It was a fun year, full of adventure and wonderment.

After the end of that first school year we took the the time to re-evaluated. We decided to try homeschooling for one more year. She started her first grade year using the complete program from Seton Home Study. This was a very intense year of study and I felt it included too much busy work. We did it all but it got difficult with all the babies running around.

Second grade was a little easier. We still used Seton but this was the last year for a pre-packaged program. I was reading so many teaching books and knew that I wanted to pick my own curriculum. I had now been teaching Pooker for 2 years and knew that we were on the right track. As each year passed Jason and I became more and more confidant that this was the path for our family.

And so it went from there. It had started as a second choice and a last minute fill in alternative. Now homeschooloing was a way of life for all of us. In the end it is a true calling from God. We took it one year at a time for 12 1/2 years. We had always thought we would send her to a Catholic High School when the time came. After moving to Texas we realized that high school would be better taught at home as well. It hasn't always been easy but Dani has always given her best. She has matured and learned to find balance in life with it all routed in prayer.

We will offer her a graduation ceremony later in the Spring. She is currently enrolled in community college for next semester. She has graduated our program one semester early. She plans to work toward her associates and then head off to A&M. She is interested in nursing of some sort, and is open to seeing what God has in store for her.

J and I are so proud as we offer the world our first graduate of T Homeschool Academy. We kept Pooker home and maybe protected her from some stuff. That wasn't our reason. Most importantly we offered her a world of studies that were not limited to four walls and a curriculum picked out by a board of strangers. We have nourished her social life with positive experiences and good Christian peers. We have boasted her self awareness offering her a strong education that included her faith. We have demanded that she learn to balance all aspects of her life to best form her into the kind, loving, smart, passionate person she is today. We are so proud to graduate Pooker. We offer the world a beautiful, smart, strong, educated, fun loving, well rounded woman of GOD.

Congratulations Pooker

We love you, Mom and Dad (Teacher and Principal)

Princess has lost a tooth!

While dressing for Mass on New Years Day (which is also the feast of Mary, Mother of God) Princess lost her first tooth. There was much cheering and shouting. She is so happy. Good news is that she didn't need dad to pull it out. Bad news is that the Tooth Fairy takes New Years Day off so no money was found in place of her tooth this morning. Bagel is now trying to convince us and her teeth that it is time for her to loose one also.
As you can tell she is still beautiful.

So much my has been happening. I needed comfort. I decided to make one of my favorite meals from my youth.  My mom was not the most flavorf...
